The participation of volunteers in clinical trials has led to the development of many today’s treatments! Not only have these participations helped save lives, but they have also contributed to a better understanding of diseases and their risk factors, to the development of different treatment options and to the continuous improvement of health care services. Ultimately, participating in clinical research improves the health and well-being of each individual.

The use of the term clinical research is mentioned in the context of an evaluation of the safety and effectiveness of new drugs, medical devices, diagnostic products or even therapeutic regimens intended for human use.
For your information, Health Canada requires that each new medication on the pharmacy shelves has been the subject of a clinical research project in Quebec. Furthermore, they are mandatory if the drug is to be used for another disease indication than the one previously approved. This clinical research is essential to demonstrate that a molecule or an existing molecule is effective and safe for the treatment or prevention of a particular health condition.

Phase 1
Involves 20 to 80 people
Healthy people take the treatment to ensure it is safe, determine how much is needed, and to determine side effects.

Phase 2
Involves 100 to 300 people
People with the medical condition being studied are observed to see if the treatment works as intended and to further assess safety and dose.

Phase 3
Involves 1000 to 3000 people
Larger groups of volunteers are monitored to continue observing side effects and to see how well a treatment works in the long-term, how long its effects last and how it compares to current treatments.

Phase 4
Involves a large population
Once a treatment has been shown to be effective and has been approved, its long-term effects and safety are studied to determine whether existing therapies should be replaced.
